The National Flight Academy - Building Design


NFA BuildingThe Phase IV/National Flight Academy Project is a 245,000 square foot expansion to the National Museum of Naval Aviation. The expansion will provide approximately 90,000 square feet of additional Museum exhibit space as well as over 155,000 square feet to accommodate 264 7th through 12th grade students weekly at the National Flight Academy. The Phase IV/National Flight Academy project will include:

  • A restoration wing where visitors to the Museum can view first hand the various phases of aircraft restoration.


  • 4 berthing wings capable of sleeping 264 students during their 6-day academic adventure.


  • A 5-floor academic wing that features:

    Second Floor

    Third Floor

    Fourth Floor

    Fifth Floor
    • Aircraft carrier ready room style classrooms.
    • Engineering, Propulsion, Aerodynamics, Meteorology, Aviation Physiology and Navigation laboratories.
    • A 300-seat theater.
    • Kitchen and restaurant facilities for students in residence and the general public.
    • A simulator wing featuring 36 two-seat FA-18 flight simulators.
    • A 15,000 square foot confidence center.


  • A Blue Angel exhibit and theater highlighting the history of the Blue Angels and what it takes to become a part of Navy’s Flight Demonstration Team.
The Phase IV exhibit area will provide excellent views and accessibility for everyone with:

  • Elevators, escalators and ramps to upper floors.


  • Walkways for birds-eye views of aircraft suspended from the overhead.


  • Up close and personal views of famous aircraft.
